Photo: The Driving Range

We took our son to the driving range, a few days ago. It was his first time, so he wasn't sure if he would enjoy it. After hitting the ball a few times, he seemed to be having fun.

His swing needs a little work, but I'll let his grandpa teach him the proper technique.

Impetigo and not pimples

A few days ago, I posted that my son got his first pimple. I was concerned because pimples usually indicate the onset of puberty.

I even decided to give my nine year old a brief talk about puberty and how he might start noticing strange stuff happening, especially when it comes to hair in strange places.

My mother-in-law recognized the blisters that were developing as impetigo and suggested we take him to the doctor's office.

The next day, we took him in for an appointment, and sure enough it was impetigo.

Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that is caused by two types of bacteria - streptococcus or staphylococcus. His doctor said his was a staph infection. She prescribed him antibiotic ointment and oral medication.

You can learn more about impetigo HERE and HERE.

"Carlos the Dwarf"

Hugo the Glorious and I, Avric Albright, were cornered by two ettins, two-headed giants, while our friends fought against goblin archers. We were defeated as the goblins successfully stole our crop.

Then I was a race of Amazon Women and Trolls as I fought for victory points in occupying Small World.

This was my first experience playing rpg with a group of other geeks. I was invited by a coworker of mine similar to how Harris (Stephen Lea Sheppard) invited Daniel (James Franco) in Freaks and Geeks.

So, similar to the Discos and Dragons episode, we all gathered around a friend's dining room table. One guy could have easily been Harris Trinsky. The others, including myself, could have picked a character from Freaks and Geeks.

We played until 1:45 in the morning. Five hours of playing rpgs. I got home tired.

Nonetheless, playing with the guys and hearing them throw out movie quotes and one-liners by Bill Murray, Robert Downey Jr. and many others, was pretty cool.

Can't wait for the next geek night. Maybe next time I'll win a game.

Confessions of a Gym Dweeb : Make it a Routine

I haven't done a blog entry on Confessions of a Gym Dweeb since November.

I've been going to the gym on a regular basis for the last three years, and yet I'm still a dweeb. I try to avoid the men's dressing room. I don't talk to people. I try not to stare. I do my routine and leave.

Being a regular, you do get to recognize the clientele. There's the guy who I always see in the hot tub. There's the guy who once gave me my keys which I left on a stationary cycling machine. There's the well-toned brunette that you'd never know she was pregnant. And there's the cute redhead with the incredible thighs I like to take a glimpse at before she go into her fitness class.

But the new year also brings new clients to the gym--the clients who make it their resolution to lose weight or get toned. Although this is a great start to get healthy, many of them only last a few months and disappear. Then we are again left with the same clientele.

I joked with my friends that this year it's slim pickings at the gym. The past few years, I'd notice milfs and young professional women joining the gym. This year there are more older couples and men. Just an observation. Really, I do try not to stare.

So, the key to personal fitness is making it a routine. In other words, during the first few months, make time on your calendar to go to the gym. Write it down with a permanent marker. Stick with that personal appointment. If you have to miss a day, make sure to get back on the routine quickly.

Another important thing is to start slow and low. Don't be intimidated by the buffs--they started low at some point too. If you are doing cardio for the first time, don't strain yourself. Work on getting your heartbeat up and don't tire yourself out.

Just my two cents.

A good reason why I haven't been posting daily

Every year in December, I get on Shutterfly and put together a calendar for the grandparents of their grandson and the various places we visit in the previous year.

This past Christmas, I put together two photo books for my wife and dad, which you can see HERE and HERE.

Well, since I received kudos from my wife and dad, I decided to spend my evenings and weekends putting together photo books of our previous vacations, instead of finding stuff to blog about.

So many apologies in advance.
