"My favorite team!"

"Daddy, the Harlem Globetrotters are my favorite team of all times. They are!"

Ecstatically, my son replayed his favorite moments throughout our 30 minute drive back home, "Daddy, and when Hi-Lite pulled down the other player's shorts... Then that other player pulled down Hi-Lite's shorts and he was wearing a skirt."

"A tutu," I interjected.

"Yeah, the skirt. Remember?"

The experience reminded me of when my dad took me to my first Globetrotter game. For some reason I remember the game being against coaches around the area.

This time, they faced off against the International Elite at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. The Elite was ahead of our team, the Globetrotters, at the half but started losing their lead towards the fourth quarter. As expected, the Globetrotters pulled ahead and reached a comfortable score and eventually won the game.

When we got home, my son couldn't stop talking about the game. He even turned the TV to the news and waited patiently for the coverage. There was nothing.

"Daddy, I think we missed the news about the Globetrotters winning the championship."

"What?" my wife inquired.

"Yes, mommy. They can now play in Austin because they won the championship," he answered.

All I do is smile.

Make your new year healthier

If you're like me, the resolution you made after eating grapes or black eyed peas have become a distant memory. Mine was to stop drinking too much wine. That didn't last. I don't even know why I made such a dumb resolution like that.

Austin Woman Magazine health contributor Jill Case offers twelve ways to make 2012 healthier rather than focusing on resolutions you may not be able to meet. You can read the full article HERE.
  1. Manage stress by incorporating stress-management techniques
  2. Have a meatless meal at least once a week
  3. Take breaks from sitting
  4. Exercise your pelvic muscles (this goes for men too)
  5. Work on personal relationships with friends and family
  6. Get sleep
  7. Get enough Vitamin D from supplements or brief sun exposure
  8. Do regular resistance training
  9. Apply sunscreen before going out in the sun
  10. Floss daily
  11. Start a gratitude journal
  12. Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke

Wallet in the gutter

IMAG0092On a wet and dreary Christmas morning, I noticed a wallet laying in the gutter on the side of the road outside our home.

A few days earlier, my neighbors were having a party that lasted probably until five o'clock in the morning. I shouldn't put all the blame on my neighbor.

There were high school kids walking up and down the street too. Regardless, I found a wallet with a drivers license and debit card inside. I think the kid was 19 years old.

I placed the soaking wallet inside a storage bag and packed it inside a bubble mailer envelope. I didn't think about it after we mailed the package.

Then one day I checked the mailbox and found a letter addressed to us but from a name I didn't recognize.  I thought perhaps it was a marketing scheme letter placed in a nice envelope.

It was a surprise when I saw that the letter was from the boy's mother thanking us for returning his wallet.  It read, "Thank you so much for returning my sons wallet. You are greatly appreciated... May God bless you and your family."

"Do these jeans make me look fat?

Caution to the guy who hears these words come out from a girl's mouth. This is probably the only time it's okay to lie.

This video reminded me of Geico's Honest Abe commercial that ran a few years ago.

"Mul-ti-pass" to Milla

Acting Appreciation

Bolero April 1998

I first noticed her as Maya Carlton, the pregnant girlfriend in the 1992 movie Kuffs. I then saw her portray a hippie musician in Richard Linklater's 1993 Dazed and Confused movie. It wasn't until I saw Return to the Blue Lagoon when I became a huge fan of Milla Jovovich. A year later, I purchased her music album, The Divine Comedy, and I listed to that CD for many years.

Wow, was I a geek. I would clip magazine pictures of Milla Jovovich and taped them to my bedroom wall. I think I may have had a poster of her as well hanging with Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Keanu Reeves--don't ask. The sad thing is that girls use to come over to my place and my room. Perhaps it explains why many of them never really stayed too long.

The role that is considered Milla's breakthrough was as Leeloo in the 1997 sci-fi movie The Fifth Element. Soon after, she starred in movies that received both accolades and critiques.

It is perhaps her role as Alice, the main protagonist in the Resident Evil franchise, that has made her a staple in sci-fi.

This month's issue of GQ magazine listed Milla Jovovich's Leeloo as one of five "Girls Who Increase Our Bandwidth!" I kind of agree. Perhaps it's her orange matted hair and being covered with what resembles toilet paper.

Lipstick on the neck prank

Makes me wonder how my wife would react if I came out of the dressing room with lipstick on my neck. Perhaps I shouldn't wonder to hard, huh.
